CO House Passes Transportation Funding Bill

On Friday morning, the Colorado House aaproved the CoPIRG-backed HB17-1242, a bi-partisan bill that would invest hundreds of millions of dollars into transportation infrastructure and services over the next 20 years, including at least $100 million in multi-modal options that can provide safe routes to schools, better access to jobs and critical medical services, and more affordable and efficient choices to deal with congestion. The bill passed on a 41-24 vote.

House Committee Approves Transportation Funding Bill

After a seven-hour hearing, the Colorado House Transportation and Energy Committee approved the CoPIRG-backed HB17-1242, a bi-partisan bill that would invest hundreds of millions of dollars into transportation infrastructure and services over the next 20 years, including at least $100 million in multimodal options that can provide safe routes to schools, better access to jobs and critical medical services, and more affordable and efficient choices to deal with congestion. The bill passed with minor amendments and heads to the House Finance Committee.

CoPIRG is calling on members of Colorado’s House Transportation and Energy Committee to approve HB17-1242 today. The sandwich giant will serve only antibiotic free chicken by the end of 2016, with a shift on turkey by 2019, and pork and beef completed by 2025. The decision came in anticipation of a petition delivery to headquarters of more than 270,000 petition signatures by CoPIRG staff and other advocacy groups.

CoPIRG Applauds Noodles and Company Plan to Go Antibiotic Free

Noodles and Company, a Broomfield-based fast-casual food chain, announced a new policy  that will phase out the use of antibiotics in their bacon, steak and meatball products by late 2016 and phase out antibiotics in chicken products by 2017. They have already phased out antibiotics in their pork. The announcement was hailed by CoPIRG as an important step in tackling the rise of antibiotic resistant “superbugs” and saving the effectiveness of human antibiotics.

Study: 72% of Fortune 500 Companies Used Tax Havens in 2014

 

Denver, October 6 – Tax loopholes encouraged more than 72 percent of Fortune 500 companies – including Western Union, Level Three Communications, and Arrow Electronics here in Colorado – to maintain subsidiaries in offshore tax havens as of 2014, according to “Offshore Shell Games,” released today by CoPIRG Foundation and Citizens for Tax Justice. Collectively, the companies reported booking nearly $2 trillion offshore for tax purposes, with just 30 companies accounting for 65 percent of the total, or $1.35 trillion.
