CoPIRG Applauds Noodles and Company Plan to Go Antibiotic Free

Noodles and Company, a Broomfield-based fast-casual food chain, announced a new policy  that will phase out the use of antibiotics in their bacon, steak and meatball products by late 2016 and phase out antibiotics in chicken products by 2017. They have already phased out antibiotics in their pork. The announcement was hailed by CoPIRG as an important step in tackling the rise of antibiotic resistant “superbugs” and saving the effectiveness of human antibiotics.

Colorado Consumers, Doctors, Farmers Call on Subway to Save Antibiotics

Thousands of consumers, doctors, farmers and Coloradans joined a call to action for restaurant giant Subway to phase out meats produced with routine use of antibiotics (i.e. for growth promotion and disease prevention). As the largest fast-food chains in the world, Subway’s action on this issue would help tackle the growing health crisis of antibiotic resistance.

A letter signed by nearly 60 public interest, medical, public health, environmental and animal welfare organizations was delivered to Subway Founder and CEO Fred DeLuca and Senior VP Suzanne Greco yesterday, asking the restaurant giant to phase out meats produced with routine use of antibiotics (i.e. for growth promotion and disease prevention). As the largest fast-food chains in the world, Subway’s action on this issue would help tackle the growing health crisis of antibiotic resistance.

Letter to Subway President and CEO Frederick De Luca

On June 23rd, a broad array of public interest organizations sent this letter to Subway's President and CEO Frederick De Luca, calling on Subway to show leadership in protecting the long-term effectivensss of antibiotics drugs. In the letter, the groups specifically called on Subway to phase out the routine use of antibiotics in the meat that is raised for its restaurants.

Today, the National Task Force for Combatting Resistant Bacteria released a five-year action plan to tackle the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.  While the plan will take several important steps necessary to control the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it will miss the opportunity to call for critical reforms in the agricultural sector that are essential to protect public health.

Prescription For Change

Our September 2014 survey of physicians paints a grim picture of the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant infections. The overwhelming majority of surveyed doctors reported that one or more of their patients had been diagnosed with a presumed or confirmed case of a multi-drug resistant bacterial infection in the past twelve months. They also expressed concern about the use of antibiotics in livestock production facilities on healthy animals in order to promote growth and prevent disease.
